5 Security Hacks I Use to Outsmart Pickpockets
Let’s talk about the one thing that can ruin a trip faster than a delayed flight: losing your wallet or passport. I used to be paranoid about pickpockets until I started using these "hidden" safety hacks.
1. The "Dummy" Wallet I carry a cheap, old wallet with a few expired cards and a small amount of cash in my pocket. My actual cards and ID? They stay in a slim RFID-blocking money belt under my shirt. If I ever get hassled, I can hand over the decoy without losing my life savings.
2. Digitizing Your Identity Before I leave, I take a photo of my passport, visa, and insurance cards and upload them to a password-protected cloud folder.
Pro Tip: I also print a physical copy and hide it in the lining of my suitcase. If my phone is stolen, I’m not stranded.
3. Lock Your Zippers (The Right Way) TSA locks aren't just for the airport. I use them on my daypack when I’m walking through crowded markets or riding public transit. It’s all about making yourself a "hard target."
Grab a 4-pack of TSA-approved cable locks here — they are much more flexible than the rigid ones!
4. Public Wi-Fi is a Trap Never log into your bank account using "Free City Wi-Fi." If you must, use a VPN or stick to your cellular data.
I’ve rounded up all the gear mentioned in this post into a Travel Safety & Security list so you can see the specs in one place.
