The Long-Haul Survival Kit: How to Arrive Feeling Human

There is a big difference between a 2-hour hop and a 12-hour trek across the ocean. After many sleepless nights in middle seats, I’ve perfected the "Long-Haul Survival Kit."

1. Invest in "Real" Noise Cancellation - The free earbuds the airline gives you are... not great. I finally invested in active noise-canceling headphones, and it’s a total game-changer. It blocks out the engine hum (and the crying baby in row 14) so you can actually sleep.

2. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job - The air in a plane cabin is drier than the Sahara. I always bring an empty collapsible water bottle through security and fill it up at the gate.

  • Hack: Drink double what you think you need, and skip the caffeine and booze until you land.

3. The "Comfort First" Footwear - My feet always swell at 30,000 feet. I started wearing compression socks on every flight over four hours. Not only do they prevent that heavy, achy feeling, but they also reduce the risk of DVT. Plus, they keep your feet warm!

4. The "Sleepy Time" Eye Mask - Don't rely on the cabin lights being dimmed. A contoured eye mask that doesn't press against your eyelids is the secret to getting a few hours of REM sleep in economy.

I’ve rounded up all the gear mentioned in this post into a Long-Flight Comfort Essentials so you can see the specs in one place.
