Travel Hacks for People Who Always Overpack (aka Me)

Let’s be real—I’m a "just in case" packer. I tell myself I need three outfit options for a dinner that hasn't been planned yet. Before I know it, I’m lugging a suitcase that could clothe a small village and sweating at the check-in counter.

After paying way too many overweight baggage fees, I finally developed a system to save my back (and my wallet). Here is how I finally cut down the clutter.

1. The "Double Duty" Rule

If an item only serves one purpose, it stays home. I’ve traded my bulky sweaters for a pashmina scarf that works as a blanket on the plane, a headcover for visiting cathedrals, and an extra layer for dinner.

The Game Changer: I started packing travel-size laundry detergent packets. Instead of packing 14 outfits for a 14-day trip, I pack 7 and do a quick sink-wash halfway through. It takes five minutes and saves half a suitcase of space.

2. The "Airport Uniform" Strategy

This is the oldest trick in the book, but so many people forget it. Stop trying to cram your hiking boots or your heaviest puffer jacket into a compression bag.

  • Wear it, don't pack it: Wear your bulkiest shoes and your heaviest coat on the plane.

  • The Bonus: Planes are notoriously freezing, so you’ll actually be more comfortable during the flight.

3. Organize (and Compress) with Packing Cubes

If you aren't using packing cubes, you’re playing travel on "Hard Mode." I used to have a "suitcase explosion" every time I looked for a pair of socks. Now, I categorize everything: tops in one, bottoms in another.

Pro-Tip: If TSA ever needs to inspect your bag, packing cubes keep your personal items from spilling out onto the dirty airport floor. You can grab a sturdy 4-piece set on Amazon for under $25 —they are easily the best investment I’ve made for my sanity.

4. The "Audit" Before You Zip

Before you close that lid, do a "Scale Test." I used to guess the weight of my bag by holding it and weighing myself on a bathroom scale—it never worked.

I started traveling with a digital luggage scale. It’s tiny, weighs almost nothing, and tells you exactly how close you are to that 50lb limit. It’s saved me from those $100 "surprise" fees at the gate more times than I can count.

5. Choose Smart Accommodations

When booking your stay, filter for "Laundry/Washer" in the amenities. Knowing I can run a load of laundry on day four gives me the psychological "permission" to leave those extra four pairs of jeans at home.
