Travel Hacks I Wish I Knew Sooner (Before I Learned the Hard Way)

When I first started traveling, I thought I was a pro—until I found myself in a rural train station with 2% battery, no Wi-Fi, and a plug adapter that didn't fit the wall.

I’ve made every rookie mistake in the book so you don’t have to. These four habits have turned my chaotic trips into smooth sailing.

1. The "One-and-Done" Universal Adapter

I used to carry a sandwich bag full of different plastic prongs for every country. It was a mess. Now, I use a single Universal Travel Adapter.

Why this specific one? Look for an adapter that includes multiple built-in USB and USB-C ports. It allows you to charge your phone, laptop, and camera simultaneously from one single outlet—which is a lifesaver in older hotels that only have one plug by the bed.

2. Digital Survival: Offline Maps & Translate

Never rely on "airport Wi-Fi" or a spotty data plan when you land.

  • Google Maps: Open the app while you still have home Wi-Fi and download the "Offline Map" for your destination. You’ll still have GPS navigation even if your phone is on airplane mode.

  • Google Translate: Download the local language pack. Being able to point your camera at a menu and have it translate instantly is a total game-changer in rural areas.

3. The "Recent Review" Filter

A "4-star" hotel can hide a lot of secrets. When I’m on Booking.com, I don't just look at the overall score—I filter by "Most Recent."

Management changes, construction starts next door, and Wi-Fi goes down. If the last three people complained about noise, believe them. Always aim for an 8.0 rating or higher to ensure your "dream view" isn't actually a view of a dumpster.

4. The "Peace of Mind" Mini First Aid Kit

There is nothing worse than trying to act out "heartburn" or "blister" using sign language at a pharmacy in a foreign country.

I put together a small, TSA-approved pouch with the essentials: ibuprofen, antihistamines, a few Band-Aids, and electrolyte packets for dehydration.
